Class Description:

ARCH600: Integrated Design Studio V (6 credits) focuses on comprehensive building and site design, integrating technology, sustainability, and regulatory requirements while emphasizing health, safety, and welfare. Students develop leadership, collaboration, and design synthesis skills within multidisciplinary teams.

ARCH611: Advanced Architecture Technology Seminar (3 credits) explores the role of technology in building design, construction, and performance, with a focus on sustainability and emerging systems.

As corequisites, these courses combine coursework and evaluations to develop skills in research, design integration, technical documentation, and professional communication, preparing students for responsible and high-performance architectural practice.

Assignment Objective:

This project envisions a small office building with public functions, including a retail space and a multi-purpose assembly/exhibition area. It is designed for the New Buildings Institute (NBI), an organization dedicated to advancing zero-energy and zero-carbon buildings. Located in Kensington, Maryland, near Washington, D.C., the site provides direct access to policymakers via the nearby train station.

The design approach can vary, either emphasizing a market-sensitive, energy-efficient design that blends with the area or serving as an innovative prototype showcasing cutting-edge sustainability strategies. The project encourages diverse design interpretations to align with NBI’s mission and goals.
