Spring 2023 Studio
William Edmondson Sculpture Garden

Assignment Objective:
This project is a three-dimensional study of a sequential experience through an outdoor garden designed to 1) memorialize William Edmondson, 2) create distinct garden experiences to view and exhibit sculptural art, and 3) allow for spaces of meditation, reflection, and play. Your goal is to convey a spatial sequence, with moments of rest and movement, through the use of edge defining elements (foliage, ground texture, depressions within the ground plane, columns, garden walls, benches, terraces, tree canopy, light/shade, thresholds and framed views) and to establish spatial order and spatial hierarchy. This project must include 3 types of spaces: places for individual reflection and meditation, a place for 1 to 3 people to sit in conversation, and a place for 10 or more to gather for readings, small concerts, or group discussions.

Spring 2023 Studio Final -Urban Design Intervention - Wheaton, MD

Assignment Objective:
The Wheaton Master Plan aims to transform the area between Georgia Avenue, Viers Mill Road, and University Boulevard into a vibrant, sustainable, and multi-cultural community hub. It emphasizes creating an integrated neighborhood where residents can easily access housing, retail, recreation, and essential services within a walkable environment. Improved multi-modal transportation, including enhanced public transit, pedestrian pathways, and bike infrastructure, will ensure better connectivity. The plan also prioritizes placemaking by introducing entertainment and social amenities to maintain an active atmosphere beyond work hours. Economic growth will be fostered by attracting businesses, young professionals, and retirees while incorporating hospitality and retail spaces. Sustainability is a key focus, with expanded green spaces designed to improve environmental quality and community well-being. A diverse range of housing options, including mixed-use developments, will accommodate different lifestyles and work needs. Additionally, the plan seeks to preserve the neighborhood’s cultural and historical character through adaptive reuse and active community engagement. Together, these elements will shape Wheaton into a dynamic, inclusive, and environmentally conscious urban center.
The Wheaton Master Plan project was a collaborative group effort, with each team member contributing to the design, planning, and development of a cohesive and sustainable community vision.
